In Iran, there is a cemetery, a burial ground whose history reaches back centuries into the early Islamic period.
Carved into its old gravestones are symbols of lives, traces of people's crafts, identities, and traditions.
I borrowed these symbols from stone and translated them into thread. Thousands of stitches, made by hand, over long winter nights, to be worn close to the heart.
This piece is inspired by a cypress carved on a historic gravestone in shiraz, Iran.
Two birds rest at its roots, while a flower blooms at its crown. Although carved in stone to remember a life once lived, I like to see this cypress as a celebration of life.
Through colourful threads and delicate stitches, a little piece of Persian heritage finds a new life.
From stone to thread.
From memory to something carried on the body.
